The department functions with the objective of delivering accessible, affordable and quality eye care to all sections of society while contributing to the academic and research activities of the institution.

The department provides outpatient, inpatient, emergency and surgical ophthalmic services. A large number of patients are evaluated daily in the Ophthalmology Outpatient Department for various ocular complaints. Comprehensive eye examinations are carried out for patients of all age groups. Services such as visual acuity assessment, refraction, slit lamp examination, fundus evaluation, intraocular pressure measurement and detailed ocular investigations are routinely performed. Patients presenting with refractive errors, cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, ocular infections, allergic eye diseases, corneal disorders, retinal diseases and neuro-ophthalmic conditions are evaluated and managed appropriately.

The department provides specialized care for cataract patients including pre-operative evaluation, surgical intervention and post-operative follow-up. Cataract surgeries are performed using standard surgical techniques including Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) and Phacoemulsification wherever indicated. The department also manages patients with glaucoma through regular screening, diagnosis, medical management and follow-up services. Screening and management of diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy are carried out as part of comprehensive eye care services.

Pediatric ophthalmology services are provided for children with refractive errors, squint, amblyopia and other ocular disorders. Ocular trauma cases presenting to the hospital are managed promptly with appropriate medical and surgical interventions. The department also provides care for patients with corneal diseases, external eye disorders and various inflammatory conditions affecting the eye.

The department is equipped with essential ophthalmic diagnostic facilities including visual acuity testing systems, retinoscopy equipment, autorefractometer, slit lamp biomicroscope, keratometer, applanation tonometer, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopes, fundus camera, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), visual field analyzer, A-scan and B-scan ultrasonography units and other ophthalmic instruments. These facilities enable accurate diagnosis and management of various eye diseases.

Various therapeutic and minor surgical procedures are routinely performed in the department. These include chalazion incision and curettage, pterygium excision, foreign body removal, lacrimal syringing, management of ocular injuries, intravitreal injections and other indicated procedures. Strict infection control practices, sterilization protocols and patient safety measures are followed during all clinical and surgical procedures.

The department actively participates in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. Teaching activities include classroom lectures, clinical demonstrations, bedside teaching, case discussions, seminars, integrated teaching sessions and practical training programs. MBBS students are provided with structured clinical exposure and hands-on training in basic ophthalmic examination techniques. Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) guidelines are followed in the conduct of undergraduate teaching programs. Students are trained in visual assessment, ophthalmic instrument handling, recognition of common eye diseases and ophthalmic emergency management.

Postgraduate students receive comprehensive training in clinical ophthalmology, ophthalmic surgery, academic activities and research methodology. They are encouraged to participate in seminars, journal clubs, case presentations, workshops and scientific conferences. Faculty members provide guidance for dissertation work, research projects and academic publications. The department continuously supports professional development and lifelong learning among students and faculty members.

Research activities form an integral part of the department. Faculty members and postgraduate students undertake clinical and community-based research projects related to cataract, glaucoma, refractive errors, retinal diseases, diabetic retinopathy and other ophthalmic conditions. The department encourages publication of research findings in national and international journals and participation in scientific conferences, workshops and continuing medical education programs.

Community ophthalmology services constitute an important component of the department's activities. Regular eye screening camps are organized in rural and urban areas for early detection of visual impairment and ocular diseases. School eye health programs are conducted to identify refractive errors and other eye problems among school children. Cataract screening camps, diabetic retinopathy screening programs and awareness campaigns on prevention of blindness are conducted periodically. Patients identified during outreach activities are referred to the institution for further evaluation and treatment whenever required.

The department actively participates in the implementation of the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI) and other public health initiatives related to eye care. Public awareness programs regarding eye donation, prevention of blindness, ocular hygiene and early detection of eye diseases are conducted regularly. Counseling services are provided to patients and their family members regarding treatment options, surgical procedures, postoperative care and rehabilitation measures.

The department also provides medico-legal ophthalmic examination services, visual disability assessment and certification services, fitness certification and referral services. Training and supervision are provided to interns, optometry personnel and other allied health professionals to enhance the quality of eye care services delivered through the institution.

The Department of Ophthalmology, Government Medical College, Namakkal continues to strive towards excellence in patient care, medical education, research and community service.
